Ultrasound Analysis
In the automotive industry, it has long been the standard to detect the quality of components through destructive testing, which means the loss of material, time and money. Our offered systems RSWA F1/F2 and RIWA manufactured by the Canadian company Tessonics Inc. uses ultrasound for non-destructive testing of components. More information can be found below.
RSWA F1 - PORTABLE ARRAY MEASUREMENT SYSTEM FOR SPOT WELDS

The measurement system was developed for a two dimensional and non-destructive quality control of resistance spot welds. The portable and simple-in-operation device is capable of producing images of the spot weld’s internal structures. In addition to live on-screen image, this device performs an estimation of the nugget diameter and compares it with predefined minimum nugget requirements.

Using the unique technology of multi-channel ultrasonic matrix transducer, RSWA collects data from the surface and from the internal structures of the nugget. Special algorithms use this data to reconstruct the image of the spot weld and estimate the average diameter of the nugget area in real time.

A demonstration how the RSWA system is used, can be seen here:

System properties:

» automatic and manual estimation of the diameter and the quality of spot welds
» automatic detection of joining level between the plates
» 3 levels of user interface complexity depending on operator skills
» including software package (generation of reports and test schedules) and file storage
» long battery life (up to 12 hours)
» light weight (4.5 kg)
» mobile use at several inspection places
» easy measurement of similar components of a series by test schedule
» compatibility with existing enterprise databases via XML-data interface
Advantages:

» automatic setting and calibration
» imaging of spot welds
» robust construction
» easy and clearly arranged application
RSWA F2 - PORTABLE ARRAY MEASUREMENT SYSTEM FOR SPOT WELDS

The RSWA F2 is the systematic advanced development of the field-proven and successful RSWA F1. The RSWA F2 is not only 50% lighter and thinner but provides unique ease of use thanks to the high-resolution 10.1“ display as well as the possibility for wireless connection to the new Tessonics Data Service.

The Tessonics Data Service (TDS) is a data management software that provides the possibility to manage all connected RSWA F2 instruments and to keep software revisions up-to-date. Additionally, measurement data can be made available - almost in real-time – to any user within a network and appropriate authorization. For this, no additional software is required, the user can directly access data with every internet capable device.

Together with the RSWA F2, a new and unique transducer technology is introduced. While for comparable instruments on the market the complete transducer has to be exchanged in case of a defect cable, cables can be replaced on RSWA F2 transducers separately which reduces maintenance costs significantly. The RSWA F2 transducers are available in a 52-element or in a new 120-element version, that provides significantly larger coverage while having the same resolution.

Features:
The F2 platform is configurable as:
» Resistance Spot Weld Analyzer (RSWA)
» Adhesive Bonding Inspection System (ABIS)

The built-in electronics supports:
» transducers with built-in identification system
» unrestricted matrix element count
» single-frame and continuous data acquisition modes

New transducer technology:
» standard 52-element transducer
» new 120-element with 15 mm diameter coverage
» unique technology to replace transducer cables in case of damagel

Applications:
» RSWA-Mode: 2T and 3T (2 & 3 plates) stack
» ABIS-Mode: glued stacks
» Steel and Aluminum
» 0.6 – 2.4 mm plate thickness
» bare, coated and painted

52-element Pencil Probe

The perfect RSWA F-2 probe for hard-to-reach spot welds

» Standard 52 element matrix probe unit
» Pencil-type housing with diameter only max= 16 mm (first 10 mm with diameter lower= 14 mm)
» not bigger in diameter than welding electrode
» detachable cable with industry-proven Lemo-connector

RIWA – DETECTION OF SPOT WELD QUALITY DURING THE WELDING PROCESS

A high frequency ultrasonic transducer is integrated into the welding electrode. This transducer generates sound waves and sends them through the electrode caps into the welding sheets. The sound waves are reflected within the sheet metals and the acoustic echoes are recorded by the transducer.

The device software enables the analysis and recording of the magnitude of the measured weld points and their position corresponding to the sheet metal surface. Alternatively, the software can display the recorded spot welds in red, yellow or green for rapid analysis of weld quality. From the recorded data, the spot weld quality and process stability can be derived very easily.

A demonstration on how the RIWA system is used, can be seen here:

Hardware:

» PC
» electronic box in laptop size
» transducer with coaxial cable

In order to ensure the synchronization with the welding process the hardware is connected to the welding controller. The RIWA system can be integrated into the plant control system, to stop the production in case of defective welds. The system does not require constant monitoring, because it can automatically monitor the welding process over a long period. The RIWA system can also be integrated into the local network to independently inform the responsible person about problems.

Applications:

» metal: steel, high-hardness steel, dual-phase steel
» metal thicknesses: 0.9 mm to 2.5 mm (single sheet thickness)
» coatings: uncoated, heat-treated, galvanized
» data storage: software archives welding point data for subsequent reporting and analysis
